Recycled Copper Wire and Dragoon Mountain Gold Mine Tailings

While my nephew was visiting we hiked around the mountains in our back yard. We spent a few hours sifting through mines tailings of a closed gold mine in the Dragoon Mountains. Several of the rocks collected were of crystal form and others either had fools gold or real gold embedded in them. Thinking I might have some customers interested in rocks like I am I made a few wire wrapped pieces out of these rocks.

The bracelets have rocks from the mountain, but not the mine, so I included them in this post. We have many of these type of crystal rocks around on our lot and the washes around here.

New Ornaments Out of Recycled Copper Wire

Had a very special customer who ordered these for Christmas presents. One was a repeat of an earlier ornament that is in a gallery. I could not get it exactly like the other piece. It is too difficult if not impossible to get the same results when you torch cut copper. The piece at the bottom has a heart inside. It is sort of difficult to make out and photograph. Below the pink pearl heart hangs a smaller dangling heart.

I had been making some of these pieces for a while now and I have finally photographed them. The pearl ponies and turquoise lady have been around for a while, but the cat and the hearts are new additions.

Moon Rise

Sun rises are certainly spectacular here. But a good moon rise is hard to beat. The light tonight was awesome (two different exposures). November 10, 2011.

2011 Pumpkin

It’s that time of year again.

This years pumpkin chose its own face with its shape. Had to use a wooden meat tenderizer to finish the piece off. I was going to open the mouth to have his parts slipping out but as I carved it, it formed its own tongue. Perhaps when I go for the seeds I will carve carefully to get a photo of what I first intended to do to him.

Of course at the end of the holiday every gourd must meet its’ demise and get moldy or just throw up…….

Recycled Copper, Pendent, Chicken

A customer of mine has a daughter with a birthday coming up. The daughter is active in 4H and has won many awards showing her chickens. The following piece is what I made for her. I used red coral, amber, white fresh water pearls, and glass beads to represent the colors of the bird.

New Gems, Jasper and Jade!

I have been looking at these stones for a while and really love the lore history that goes with them. Below are a few interesting things I found out about Jade and Jasper.

Jasper: Medicinal values were long attributed to jasper, including a belief that wearing it strengthened the stomach. Jasper was also believed to cure gynecological problems.

Leopard skin Jasper is said to bring one what they need. Poppy Jasper is said to help bring joy into life. Opalite Jasper is said to help one sleep.
Jasper was thought to drive away evil spirits and protect against snake and spider bites.

Jasper is common and widely distributed, occurring chiefly as veinlets, concretions, and replacements in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, as in the Urals, North Africa, Sicily, France, India, Venezula and Germany.
Some varieties are color-banded, and beautiful examples of jasperized fossil wood are found in Arizona, U.S.

Jade: Jade is an ancient stone used to attract love. A butterfly carved from jade holds a special romantic significance. Ancient Chinese legend tells of a youth who wandered into the garden of a wealthy mandarin in pursuit of a multi-colored butterfly. Instead of being punished for trespassing, his visit led to marriage with the mandarin’s daughter.

The soothing green color of jade makes it a wonderful healing stone. It helps the body in self-healing while working through underlying, non-physical reasons for a precipitation for disease. It is particularly helpful for kidney, heart and stomach complaints.

Dish Bug, Recycled Art

I had a break in welding time since the weather has been so windy and dry. Now that monsoon came I was able to get back to some welding projects.

Made of a 5 wood, chair legs, welding rod, lug nuts from our Jeep, a fence post, bolts, blades from a defunct pair of scissors, round grills from a smoker, and well, …what Dish TV left behind after we cancelled them, thus the name of this piece. (Guess it sounds better than Direct TV bug).

I just finished working on a tessellation project for my 3-6 grade students. I decided a tessellation would look great on this guy so I incorporated a simple one for texture. As usual the most fun other than welding that I had with this piece was mixing colors and painting them.

New Works With Inspiration

I did mention in the last post that I would add more pictures of inspirational word jewelry. But there were also other recent works I photographed so I decided to put them all in a new post. There was one other piece I was going to add, perhaps I will later. I was having trouble with the focus on the camera during this shoot and the photos I took just were not good enough for me. It is a set I decided to keep for myself using white pearls and the word “imagine”. So I guess I have plenty of time to re-shoot the set. Since I teach art I felt I needed that set to wear around my students.

Many Storms One Night, 9/7/11

This is just a series of four photos I shot this night. Had lots of lightning but never could get a shot of it. I can really admire the patience it takes for photographers to capture the right moment to get a lightning shot. Perhaps some day it will be one accomplishment I can make. Either way, even though this is one storm, the photos were all so different in their own way I just decided to publish all of them.
